Biography

Baptism

  • Neeltje was baptized on 29 May 1705 at the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church, Brooklyn, Kings Co, New York. The record lists her parents as "Cornelis Van Couwenhove and Margrieta." Witnesses were "Jan Luikasse [and] Maeike, his wife."[1][2][3]
  • Dorothy Koenig reported this information in an email dated 5 Apr 2000. She identified Maeike as Mayke R[oelofs] Schenck who married Jan Lucas Van Voorhees on 5 March 1704 (his second wife), Bergen, p. 378. This makes her the baby's maternal aunt. [4]

Marriage

  • Married Jacob Vanderbilt.

Research Notes

  • Abraham Van Horn and wife Antje were sponsors at the baptism of Neiltje's son Jacob Vanderbilt, April 1733, Readington Dutch Reformed Church, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey.
  • Jacob and Neeltje Vanderbilt were sponsors at the baptism of Abraham's daughter Neeltje, 14 Apr 1734, same church. This suggests a blood relationship between these two families. Antje Van Horn's maiden name was Couwenhoven, and she had a sister named Neeltje, other data unknown. Jacob Vanderbilt's brother Aris married another sister from this family.
